Application Rationalization
Rationalizing application requests should be part of every organizations application lifeline.
You probably do a bit of this today. This paper highlights all of the things that you should consider as part of this process.
The Enterprise Application Model
Research on practices for application preparation and deployment (technology independent)

The ProblemEvery large organization has teams of folks involved with getting application onto user's desktops. No matter what technologies and tools they use, their are some common practices that we see when it comes to the preparation and deployment of these applications. Application lifecycles are dramatically shortening, especially high is the rate of patching that must be done. Most of these have some level of policies defined at some point on how this occurs. Most are inconsistent in implementing those policies. This leads to longer queues, inconsistencies, errors, increased help desk tickets that are hard to resolve, less productive end-users, and we are not serving the needs of the organization well. The SolutionThis paper provides an organized look at how enterprises are organizing to do this work - at least in theory. It is a collection of everything we are seeing, written as a set of practices, without judgement or suggestion on what you should do. Read this paper. Organize what you think you are doing today and re-document it. Identify the stakeholders and get them involved and committed. Communicate the output and enforce it. You are now ahead of 90% of the other organizations out there. Then step back and look at how to improve. What things came up during that work that might make sense? What did you see in the paper that others are doing and you are not? Cycle through again and improve. Cut down application wait times. Cut down on help tickets. Empower your users to be more productive. All without having to pay a vendor anything. |
